2012 Reflection

This year has been a really fun and exciting year.It has really cool being in the new year 7 and 8 classes. Also part of being as year 7 you  go to Tamaki College Tech and learn things like Electronics, Food and also Hard Materials. It is a lot of fun

Next year I will be a year 8, which means you will have more responsibilities. Next year I would like to do good in school work, sports and being a leader.

I would like to thank Mrs Squires for being a great teacher this year.

Netbook Reflection 2012

This year is soo much cooler using our little devices, netbooks. It is much better then writing on scrunched up paper. You can also share your work with people all around the world. Its like the new way of learning!

Our netbooks are helping us to learn by our self and were not relaying on our teacher too much. We also have access to a lot of things that will help us learn more like videos, rubrics and information.

There are some problems however, that are quite annoying. One of them is the slow Internet connection.Another problem is that it takes for ever to load things. But it is much better than last year.

If we had to go back to writing on paper it would be boring. We wouldn't be able to share our work as much.

Our fun day!

“Your first task is to create a christmas tree out of the things provided on the on the task paper” said Mrs Nua. The supplies we had were 9 A4 coloured paper 1 meter of tin foil, 20 sheets of newspaper and 2 fruit bursts. Also the tree had to have at least 4 branches, and was able to stand up by itself and you had to be able to move it around without things falling of. We were split up into 7 group. The key for success was team work.

The christmas tree sounded like a easy idea but really it was quite hard especially when you had about half an hour to make it. We decided to make a tree that has newspaper for the main part and coloured paper for decorations and the branches. Also we took out the fruit bursts out of its wrapper and use the wrapper to make a snake as one of the decorations.

Luckily we were able to finish in time. The song we sang was silent night. After morning tea we had 1 more activity. It was a mixture of running, catching, making and also using a big slingshot. It was my favourite activity.

It was a lot of fun and I hope we do it again.

Forest Narative

“How much longer do we have to walk for, this bag is so heavy, why can we just camp here “I puffed. “We'll find somewhere soon”said Mum. “Ok then”replied Ashleigh. It felt like we were in the middle of nowhere. The blazing sun didn’t help either it just made me even more tired.

Finally after a two hours walk, not really two hours but it felt like it. We stopped to eat some lunch. “Hmm this is really nice but I think we should carry on “ said Mum.”Ohh do we have to move on now”I said feeling a little bit annoyed. “Yes Come on” replied Mum

While walking almost everywhere mum finally said ”This looks like a good place to camp lets camp over here”. I was relieved when I heard that. While unpacking our stuff we both looked at each other thinking the same thing.

We forgot to pack one of the most important things. The Tent! I mean how could we forget. Quickly we had to come up with a plan, because night was falling and we didn’t want to sleep on the ground We decided to to collect some sticks, leaves and some moss for the bedding. We were making a hut for us to sleep in. It sounded easy but it was quite hard, especially trying to get things when you have to hold a torch in one hand.

The coldness shock my body giving me goose bumps. I wish I was at home in my nice warm snuggly bed I thought to myself. But there was no time to think. We had to get stuff for our hut and fast.

Luckily we made our hut and used our matches to make a fire with some wood. My mum and I got into our sleeping bags and snuggled up next to each other. The fire helped a lot too.

Barnyard Narrative

“Come here Vivienne and Osana quickly,” called out Tom to his small chubby dogs. Turning the corner he noticed something but couldn’t see because of the dark. “Come on girls lets go check that out,” “Wow an abandoned barn,” Tom sprinted to the door. “Errr,” went the door as he entered with the two dogs. All he could hear was footsteps but they had stopped.

”Ohhh freaky house” whispered Tom.  Getting closer and closer to the end of the hallway the debris got worse “Slam!!” “Woof Woof “screeched Vivienne as she was getting dragged into a room. “Vivienne NO!!!” Tom shouted with anger, “Osana come here,  Osana, OSANA!,”

Tom searched everywhere but had no luck, ”I wish I never came here” he sobbed, “Oww,” one of the dogs winned. Suddenly another thud, “Viv, Osana are you there,” silence filled the room as he headed towards a small door for him just to fit in. “Err, bang,” the door slammed behind him. He started to freak out as a weird sound was approaching him, “Arghh.”

To be continued...

Thanks to Jarna for helping me write this story.

My Narrative about the Beach

The sun was blazing down on mum and the kids as they lazed outside on the deck. It felt like we were in a oven get cooked.  “Why don’t we pack our bags and spend some time at the beach” thought mum. Everyone agreed with that idea. So they quickly got their stuff ready and left. They also called some of their family members to join them.

On our way to the beach mum’s phone started to vibrate. It was her sister saying that she can’t make it because her car had broken down. Sadly they would have to go to the beach without them. Luckily they had other people that could come.

When they arrived they saw that they weren't the only ones that wanted to go to the beach. There were people everywhere. People swimming, making sand castles relaxing on the sand and a new thing they recently put in jumping of the rock.”Cool the rocks”said everyone in excitement. But then Vivienne suggested, "Let's go play water volleyball down the other end of the beach."

"Cool idea!"

Splashing and jumping to hit the ball everyone soon forgot about their little cousins Tom and Jerry. "Hey has anybody seen Tom and Jerry?" Vivienne yelled. So they got out of the water and split up looking for them. “Where are they, I thought they were with you” I said angrily but worried. We had checked every where except for one place, The Rocks.  In a flash they all ran to the rocks. To their surprise they found both Tom and Jerry just lying on the rocks judging who did the best tricks when they jumped off.”Pheww” they said wiping the sweat of their foreheads.

From then on they always kept sight of them.Making sure that they were always in the right place. The final thing they did was get an ice cream then it was back home for them. The twins ended up sleeping in the car, properly tired from watching people jump.

Our AMAZING Riverside Camp

“Wheels on the bus go round and round” was what the little kids on the bus were saying, as we were on our way to Willow Park. It was a camp for riversiders and a couple of other people that wanted to come. We stayed there for a 5 days Monday-Friday.

My favourite game that we played were GYOB. GYOB stands for Get your own back it is  just like a massive food fight with everyone. But not only with food but thing like mud, sponges with water. The leaders also sprayed water at us with the hose. Fun is the word to explain how I felt, mostly because you could hit people and, see there reaction on there face.

On the last night we had a special dinner and a concert. The theme was superheroes. But i didn’t dress up in anything. For dinner we had Pork with peas, potatoes and pumpkin. It was delicious. Our concert was good too. Everyone did a good job of performing.

Camp was a lot of fun. I hope I can go again next year. Also thanks to all of the leaders, Mr Burt and Georgie for making it possible.

My Nan's Birthday

“Have you set up the table yet? whispered my mum We were going to have a surprise Hawaiian dinner for my nana’s birthday. Not only were we going to have a Hawaiian dinner my siblings and I had to dress up in Island cloths. I was wearing a hula skirt was a Island T-shirt.

We had heaps of seafood and island food. We were having a feast. First I tried some taro and some prawns, it was delicious. My favourite thing to eat was the prawns.

After we ate my brothers and I did little items for our nan. I said a poem that i made up for her. Then i got my uke and played the happy Birthday song while my brothers sang. My sister Caramel tried to sing to with us as well.

It was a lot of preparation but it turned out to be good at the end. I hope my Nan had a good time.

Sports Rotation

"What are we doing next?" I asked our team captain Toreka. All of the Senior school was out playing games while our teachers had a look at what the junior bit of the school was doing. We did activities like singstar, decorating shells, obstacle courses and cyber coach. It was fun to play games first thing in the morning especially for team points.

Each group did 4 activities. The 4 activities we did were Singstar, Jump Jam (dancing), watching the Toyshop Production and decorating Cookies and shells. My favourite activity was watching the Toy Shop because it was fun to see what our friends looked like when they were younger.”Hey there’s you,” said my friend Shoal. I was dressed up as a Bear.

My other favourite activity was decorating cookies and shells. We had to split into 4 groups. But we couldn’t just decorate them in any way, we had to make something that related to the Olympics. In my group we decided to draw the Olympic torch with felt pens on the shell.

It was a lot of fun and I hope that that we can do it again soon.

Cross Country

After a long wait watching the little kids run their race it was finally our turn. As we got ready on the starting line I could see mud all over the feild.’”Oh no” I moaned knowing that I would get really muddy. As soon as Mr Burt clapped his clappers we were off like a stampede
of animals.

As I got in the bush walk it was so hard to run.The track was narrow which made it hard to overtake people and there was so much mud.The further I got the mudder it got. After a while I could hardly notice the shoes I was wearing. Suddenly I slipped going down one of the stairs hurting my leg. Now the back of my pants were all muddy. “Now I’m really getting ” I thought to my self.

Finally seeing the finish line I felt happy to see our house captions Kayde and Vanilla waving our Yellow Taki-Timu Flag.

Smoking

Smoking is very bad for your health. It has over 4000 chemicals and a very addictive drug called nicotine. The health problems it causes are heart disease, throat cancer, black lungs and circulation problems. If its really bad your toes might go black and you might need to get your leg cut off. In New Zealand over 4500-5000 people die every year because of smoking.

Not only does smoking affect your body from the inside it can affect your body from the outside as well. It can  give you things like rotten and yellow teeth, yellow fingernails. It also makes your skin dry up giving you wrinkles.

The cost is also a big thing especially if you smoke a packet a day you spend $15 a day on a packet of cigarettes that's about $420 a month. You could save heaps of money and spend it on something you will want in the future.

Why do teenages start? Is it because they want to look cool in front of their friends or is it because they are pressured to? In order to not smoke you have to stand up for yourself.

So I think it is better not to start smoking.

The Amazing Valerie Adams

Valerie Adams, New Zealand’s shot put champion, was unable to hold back her tears as she was being interviewed. Following her final throw, she had the realisation, that her wishes of becoming the World Shot Put Champion for the second time, were now ruined. A woman named Nadzeya Ostapchuk of Belarus had taken Valerie’s place, beating her personal best of 21.34metres. This was a very emotional evening for her. Valerie had worked tirelessly and despite her disappointment, she was proud of her achievements even though she got silver.

Joshua Iosefo

Joshua Iosefo is a year 13 prefect at Mt Roskill Grandma.Like all prefects they have to give a speech to the school but instead of giving a speech he wrote a poem called “Brown brother”.His friend Rashard filmed it and put it on youtube. Then Campbell live saw it and brought him into his studio, and told him to say it again so everyone can see it.

Joshua Iofeso is telling us not to listen to stereotypes, and to also not be scared to change.Believe in yourself so you can go beyond your limit and succeed. Also to not be scared of being the first to graduate or get a really good job.LIke our korero champions never give up you can do the same thing.

This poem really inspired me to do better in everything I do and I hope it can inspire you in a way.

With veins bulging as he balances the weight upon his chest, Precious the weight lifter had determination written all over his face.  He was prepared. With a huge heave, he lifted the enormous bar over his head for all to see. This was a great achievement. By Ashleigh and Vivienne

Comparing Picasso and Matisse

Ms Squires Gave us the task of comparing 2 artist called Picasso and Matisse.Matisse and Picasso were born in the same era.Matisse’s art teacher thought thought that he would never be a good artist, but Matisse was determined to become an artist.

At the age of 16 Picasso’s father enrolled him in Spain's most distinguished art school, Madrid's Royal Academy of San Fernando. He struggled to listen what the teacher was saying.Picasso’s style was cubism and Matisse’s style was fauvism.Picasso and Matisse became lifelong friends.

Even though Picasso and Matisse have both drawn pictures of women they have a different themes.Picasso theme is war and Matisse doesn't have a strong theme as his painting is showing no feelings.

Picasso’s lines are big, bold and bright black.Where Matisse’s lines match with the
vibrant colours he used. Also Matisse has used bright colours like yellow, green and orange. Picasso has used natural colours. The texture of the painting are different.Picasso’s is smooth and Matisse’s is rough.

Even though Picasso and Matisse have both drawn pictures of women they are completely different. They both have different styles and are different texture.I like both of the pictures.

Playing Kiwi Kick

The sky was grey with clouds. Goosebumps were covering my body. With wind blowing giving me a cold shock.Standing there waiting for us were two people called Sam aka Sandwich and Mick.He told us what we were here for Kiwi Kick and started to tell us alittle bit about it.”I hope it doesn’t rain.

Before we could start our skills we played a little warm up game called continues tag.Everyone is in you have to tag people. If you get tagged you have to watch the person that tagged you and when they get tagged you can stand up and tag other people.

One of the skills were learnt were called the drop punt were you hold the ball in front of you and keep the laces away from you faces. We had to kick it to our partner. There is a pass called a hand pass where you have to close one of your hands and  hit the ball kind of like volleyball.

To help us expand our skills we had learnt we played  a game where you aimed at Sam the netball post and if you get them you get points for your team.We were split up into two teams one called Penguins and the other teams called polar bears. We used to punt kick skill.Yes i said with excitement as i had just got a point for my team the Penguins. But at the game the  Polar Bears had won.

It was alot of fun learning how to play.In a couple of weeks we will be playing Kiwi Kick and I cant wait.

Seeing The Avengers

"Quickly get ready we're going to go out somewhere"said my mum."Were are we going"thought to my self.

After we got ready we hopped in the car. After a couple of minutes wait we made it to Sylvia Park.We were going to watch the Avengers."Yeah"we said. Also we were going to watch on the big screen.

We were the first people to get into the Cinema. All of a sudden the whole cinema was packed there wasn't even one seat left.We had to wait for a couple more minutes for the movie to start.

About a quarter way through the movie there was a fault and the whole screen went black. It was right in the middle of the interesting action bit.For about 15 minutes we had to sit there waiting for them to fix it.

After 2 and a half hours the movie was finished.I wanted to watch it again. My favourite character in the movie was Iron man because he has an iron suite and he can fly.

The movie was really cool.I would recommend this movie.

Holiday Highlight-Amazing Maze

Entrance Sign to the maze
After a long wait through traffic we had finally made it to the Amazing Maze. We heard that they would be having a special Easter hunt with heaps of chocolate eggs. That got me excited. We also found out that the maze is part of Spookers. Spookers is a scary attraction place but you have to be over 18 to enter. But the maze wasn't scary the only thing was, that it was quite big or should I say enormous!

"I found the first Easter egg"I shouted with happiness. I wanted to eat it but we saved it util we got out of the maze to count them all.5 minutes in the maze I was sweating like a pig in the hot sun. After a while we forgot about the heat  found more and more Easter eggs.

"Who's that"I wondered. It was the Easter bunny giving out eggs.My mouth started to water when I saw all the eggs we had found. As I looked on the map I saw we were no where near the end.We were only a quarter way through the maze and it has all ready been at lest a hour.

All sticky and tired still walking though the maze.It was all ways exciting finding eggs though.Up ahead we found a look out. That meant we were about half way.But when I saw the rest of the way we had to go my mouth dropped. There was a whole more to go.

"What's that" I wondered. As I got closer towards it I had found the Exit."The excited come look I tolled my brother.I was relived that I finally got into the maze but I kind of wanted to go in again.

It was a great Easter experience. But it wouldn't have happened if my mum and dad didn't take us.So I would like to say thanks to my mum and dad.

Show not tell table tennis

Carefully I aimed the ping pong ball over the net to my opponent, who then returned the shot back to me. It was like a rally. When all of a sudden my opponent tried to do an ace but she over shot the table. “Yeah. 1-0” I cheered.

The Amazing Race

“Ohhh The Amazing Race,” my group said in excitement as we were siting under the Marquee waiting to start our activty.Suddenly Mr Barks anounced,"Your first challange is to get into a group of 4 and make a sling shot out of a piece of wood shaped like a Y, some rubber and string. Also you will need to to make missile out of newspaper and masking tape” He then  went on to explain, “Once you finish making it you will have to go to where the buckets are and shoot for points. The further the bucket are the more points you get.If you hit the bucket you get the amout of points on the bucket, but if you get it into the bucket you get double the amount of points. Your time to make the sling shot starts now".

It sounded like it was quite easy to make but when you tried, it really was quite a challenge. It took our group a couple of tries to make the sligshot but luckily we finally had success. Now we could shoot for points.

I have never really played with a sling shot so it was quite hard to hit the buckets. Also I found the misile was to light to get any points. On my 3rd go I finally to get 100 points!”Yes” I said with joy. After a while it was time to play our next chalange.

We had a map of our school which had thing we had to collect to make a hobo stove.A hobo stove is a big empty can upside down on top of a fire.So then you can cook things on top of it.Once again we had to get into a group of 4.We dicied to split up and collect the things we needed. We had to search for signs saying amazing race. The places we went to were the office to get matches, all the way down to the reserve to get a bag of wood, the pools to get the fire starter, the trees and the bakery to get a egg. Then come back and get our fire started.

It didn’t take long for the can to heat up so we put our egg on it and watched it cook.It was exciting..A couple of minutes later our egg was finally done.We had suceeded.

I had some much fun playing the Amazing race.I hope we can have the activity again next year.

Dr Ben Carson

Dr Ben Carson was born in Detroit Michigan, America. He was raised by his mother who only had a third grade education and was married at the age of thirteen. Sadly when Benjamen was only 8 years old, his parents divorced and Ben’s mother Sonya, was left to raise the boys alone. She had 2-3 jobs at a time, to help provide things for them.

Dummy Dummy Dummy, that is what Ben’s 5th grade classmates would always call him, and because of this, he had a violent and uncontrollable temper. When their mother found out that her sons grades were plummeting, she was determined to help change her children’s lives by giving them a limited t.v watching time and make them read two books from the library, and write a review on it. But, because of Sonya’s poor education she could hardly read a thing, though she would try to give them a tick and make it look like she had read and marked their writing.

A few weeks later, Ben shocked his whole class by identifying a black shiny rock, it was called an obsidian. He remembered reading about it in a book. At that moment, he realised he wasn’t stupid. He was hungry for more knowledge. For this he needed to control his temper. A year later Ben was at the top of his class,  and it was all thanks to his mother, who pushed him to his limits. Now Ben Carson is a neurosurgeon and is trying to help other children, who have the disadvantage of living in a poor community, like he did when he was young.

Cyber Smart

Part 1

She Snow White has just made the biggest mistake of her life, posting a photo of herself on her facebook page on in a whim. Her settings were on private and the only people that could see it was her friends... she thought but she was mistaken.

Her friends must have put the photo on another website, which was public. “ Oh no” She flippantly said to herself. Snow White saw that everyone had seen her photo online, she felt mortified at herself. She tried to in vain it off every website she could find it on, but it was everywhere and now everyone could see it.  “I give up” she sulked. Eventually it would go to her parents. “ How Embarrassing”

                                                         Part 2
Too often these days people post on pictures, information and many more things that aren't cybersmart. The consequences for this is hurting people, never finding a job and dodgy people might know everything about you. I urge you to think before you post, here are some information for the consequences.

If you want a job in the future you would need a positive footprint. Future employers will google search your name and see all the things you have done in the past. If you have a negative footprint, like bad photos, bad comments they will defiantly not except you.

You never know that a dodgy person can connect you, show your post to anyone and to share your photo to other people and then everyone in the world will see it. Some people put there settings on private, but are they really?

Many people have been hurt by what people say and do online. Some of the things that people say can start an argument. So if you can’t say it directly to there face then why would you say it online?

The Internet is a cool tool to use for learning, and finding out things. But if you do the wrong things on it, things can go wrong. So once again I encourage you to THINK BEFORE YOU POST!!!

It was a cold day at the Beach

It was a cloudy day at the beach. The sky grey as can be, was turning more dim by the minute. As soon as I put my foot in the water, shivers ran up my spine and my body was covered with goosebumps. “This is not the best day to be at the beach” I muttered to myself.

A Poem about Me

I am the youngest out of my siblings
I like to make my parents proud.

I like to play my ukulele
but only at home by myself.

Touch is my favourite sport
I love it when I step somebody or  get a try.

I am a game freak
I love playing stagey games and adventure games.

I love to listen to music
All of the diffrent beats make me fell happy.

I go to church
I am a christen and i am proud to be one.
